When it comes to launching a new blockchain game, the current cookie cutter approach is to run a decentralized app (dApp) using Ethereum to generate a ERC20 token and ERC721 collectibles.
Then spend a lot time talking about differentiating genre, gameplay and art style.
More experienced and invested players can dive into the meta-game experience of mining, customizing, and card evolutions
Seattle-based startup Cryptogogue certainly has genre, gameplay and art style covered but the thrust of its new collectible card game Volition is much, much more innovative.
Starting with a core built on years of experience in physical trading card game design, Volition also comes with the promise of a proprietary blockchain, the ability to combine characters and resources to level up cards, the ability to skin any card with custom art, a dedicated crypto-mining feature to gain booster packs, and the usual trading ability we’d expect from any blockchain game.
Stick that lot in your pipe and smoke it CryptoKitties clones…

Of course, that’s a lot to hang on the shoulders of one game, but designer Ken Pilcher (The Spoils) promises an accessible learning curve for an experience that will be pitched somewhere between those two giants of the genre Magic: The Gathering and Hearthstone.
We will be among the first to embrace the full spectrum of possibilities afforded by blockchain
“The intuitive gameplay combined with the endless customization opportunities means those new to CCGs will be able to quickly pick up and enjoy Volition, while more experienced and invested players can dive into the meta-game experience of mining, customizing, and card evolutions,” he comments.
Cryptogogue CEO Partick Meehan is also keen to stress Volition’s difference in terms of other blockchain games.
“Most projects today focus on leveraging blockchain within centralized games and platforms, which fundamentally misses the point of the technology,” he says.
“By building Volition on a foundation of blockchain, not just from a technology perspective but also with a decentralized business and operating model, we will be among the first to embrace the full spectrum of possibilities afforded by blockchain in a collectible gaming context.”
You can keep up-to-date with how Volition develops – the first playable paper beta is expected “soon” – and get “exclusive incentives” by signing up via its website.
