Animoca invests in Astar to drive web3 adoption via Sony’s Soneium

Animoca Brands has made a strategic investment into Astar Network, an ecosystem looking to bring Japanese and Asian entertainment and gaming culture onchain.

The amount of the investment wasn’t disclosed.

Through the collaboration, the companies aim to drive onchain deployment of Japanese and Asian IP for mainstream web3 adoption globally. A key focus is scalable entertainment solutions, with integrations such as Anime ID, the identity and reputation layer on Soneium, powered by Animoca’s Moca Network and San FranTokyo.

Astar’s mission to support entertainment innovation is further bolstered by initiatives like the Anime Art Fest, an IP and creator-driven campaign brought to Soneium by San FranTokyo and Animoca.

By prioritizing entertainment culture and web3 mass adoption, the companies hope to create new opportunities for artists, developers and digital creators. The collaboration will also leverage Astar Network’s ASTR token for ecosystem growth.

Animoca Brands co-founder and chairman Yat Siu commented, “Astar’s focus on onchain entertainment IP, particularly in Japan and Asia, presents a unique opportunity to accelerate global web3 adoption. By combining Astar’s strong ecosystem with our extensive portfolio and experience, we’re poised to unlock new possibilities for creators, developers, and users in the rapidly evolving web3 entertainment landscape.”

Astar Network founder Sota Watanabe added, “As one of the most active investors in the web3 space, Animoca Brands understands the direction the ecosystem is heading, and we take their support as confirmation that our efforts are contributing to the long-term success of blockchain and digital assets.”
