The Sandbox has launched a $5,000 Game Creator Bounty, offering developers $50 to create games inspired by their favorite content creators.
Running from 4th to 16th November, the campaign will reward up to 100 eligible submissions on a first come, first served basis.
Each developer can submit two games, giving them a maximum payout of $100. All submissions require review and approval, so completing the steps does not automatically guarantee payment.
The brief is to translate a recognizable personality’s interests, content and community into an original game. Suggested examples include Casey Neistat skating through New York, dodging taxis and collecting cameras, or a MrBeast experience built around increasingly ridiculous challenges.
Games must work properly, be enjoyable on mobile devices and be available through a public link. Developers must also upload thumbnails and game metadata to The Sandbox’s creation portal.
However, publishing the game is only part of the requirement. Participants must share a post on X or TikTok containing footage of gameplay, a direct link to the game, and tags mentioning both The Sandbox and the featured creator.
They then submit their game and social post through a Google form, with a Discord channel providing updates about the campaign and remaining reward slots.
The rules exclude political campaigning, harmful or defamatory content, broken games and submissions that infringe intellectual property rights. Developers are responsible for respecting the rights of the people they feature. The invitation to make a game about a creator should therefore not be confused with permission to use that person’s protected material.
Commercially, the interesting element is how closely the bounty links game production to audience acquisition. The payment is small. Even with AI tools reducing development time, $50 offers limited compensation for building, testing and promoting a game.
For The Sandbox, the economics look more attractive. A subscribed campaign would produce 100 games as well as promotional videos and posts, each potentially connecting the platform to an existing creator and their followers. Requiring developers to tag those creators creates an opportunity for them to discover and redistribute the resulting games.
The program also plays into The Sandbox’s plans for its Sandbox Studio AI tools, which it plans to launch in 2016, enabling anyone to make complex games using its assets, including NFTs and SAND token payments.
