Somnia launches mainnet and its SOMI token
Following a six-month testnet phase that processed over 10 billion transactions and attracted over 70 development partners, the high performance EVM-compatible Somnia L1 blockchain has launched its mainnet.
Developed by UK tech company Improbable and the Somnia Foundation, the blockchain’s SOMI token is also now live.
During testing, Somnia processed 1.9 billion transactions in a day, with fully onchain Minecraft-clone Chunked generating over 250 million transactions in a five-day-period.
More generally, Somnia’s design mean that it should be able to handle one million transactions per second with sub-second finality.

“Building Somnia is about more than launching another blockchain. It’s about enabling the online experiences that blockchain technology is built to unlock,” said founder Paul Thomas.
“With mainnet live and the $SOMI token powering our economy, we are supporting a growing ecosystem of enterprises, brands, developers, creators and users. We are on track to reach 60 billion monthly transactions by enabling unique, large-scale experiences that no other blockchain can match.”
At launch, Somnia says it has over 70 content partners, which in terms of games include PC naval game Maelstrom and sport arena game Sparkball.
The Somnia Foundation is also running its $10 million Dream Catalyst accelerature program for games, and will host 24 online mini-hackathons over the next 12 months to further boost its ecosystem.
