Craft World dev Voya Games raises $5 million

German developer Voya Games has bucked current trends, announcing it’s raised $5 million in new investment.

The funding was led by cypto VC 1kx and traditional VC Makers Fund. RockawayX and Sky Mavis co-founder Jeff Zirlin and The Sandbox’s Sébastien Borget also participated.

This takes Voya’s total funding to over $6 million.

It launched its NFT collection called Angry Dynomites Labs on Ethereum in 2022 and has since been building a fully onchain mobile/browser idle resource game, which is now called Craft World. It uses those original NFTs to supercharge the production of some starter resources, but anyone can play the free-to-play game without NFTs.

During the game’s prolonged playtesting phase, which has been running on a Polygon-based testnet, Voya Games says that over 240,000 players have registered with a regular monthly audience of around 50,000.

As well as its regular always-on gameplay, Craft World has run several collaboration events, in which players work together to collect the many resources required to create masterpiece assets, with their involvement rewarded through a leaderboard.

The funding announcement comes as Voya plans to launch Craft World and its Dyno Coin onto mainnet this summer, although the blockchain hasn’t yet been announced.

“Our goal is to build a token ecosystem where games are connected through a shared player economy and culture. Craft World is our first step in that vision, already attracting over 50,000 monthly active users in its test phase,” commented Voya’s CEO Oliver Löffler.

“With this funding, we’ll scale our experiences, expand our user base, and grow our ecosystem, laying the groundwork for a network of interconnected games built on participation and long-term trust. We’re excited to advance this mission with the launch of Craft World later this year,”

1kx’s Peter Pan added: “Voya’s building a web3 gaming ecosystem that prioritizes openness and ownership, treating the game world more like a public good than a closed economy. Under Oliver Löffler’s leadership, the team brings a rare combination of technical know-how and mass-market experience, and we’re proud to support their mission to create interconnected games and experiences unified by player ownership.”

Löffler was previously a co-founder at mobile idle game developer Kolibri Games, which was acquired by Ubisoft for over $160 million in 2020.
