TOKYO BEAST shuts down after 76 days

Only launched on 9th June 2025, mobile JRPG TOKYO BEAST has announced it’s shutting down on 24th August.

A Medium post from producer Naoki Motohashi calls this “unexpected news”, also saying that he announces it “with a heavy heart”.

The reason given is the game’s high operational costs, adding:

“After extensive discussions with our stakeholders, we have arrived at the painful decision to terminate the service”.

Running on the Immutable blockchain, TOKYO BEAST was the first title to be launched using the TGT (Tokyo Games Token), which is down 95% since its 21 May launch.

Highly experienced Japanese game companies including Cygames and Gumi were part of the group running the project.

Designed to bridge both web2 and web3 players, including with high value weekly PVP tournaments and wagering mechanics, TOKYO BEAST was highly influenced by Japanese JPG metaplay, something which likely made it overally complex for anyone not experienced in such highly optimized games.

However, there is some good news as Naoki Motohashi says the TOKYO GAMES Foundation will continue to operate, and has additional games in development.

It will also provide some level of compensation using USDC to holders of TOKYO BEAST assets such as tokens and various NFTs.

There will be an AMA in the game’s Discord on Thursday 24th July at 10:30 UTC to discuss the situation.
