Boasting 1.9 million wallets and $15 million NXPC item spend, Nexpace hails MapleStory N’s success

Launched on 15th May 2025 by Nexon’s web3 division Nexpace, MapleStory N is the first element in the larger MapleStory Universe.

Based on the much-loved 20-year-old IP, the PC-based MMORPG has since seen a high level of engagement, both in terms of players but also in terms of activity on the MapleStory Universe NFT marketplace.

Of course, any sort of project this complex – complex both in terms of its web2 and web3 components – doesn’t succeed without challenges to overcome. To-date, Nexpace has been dealing with ensuring the game is well balanced, the economy is sustainable and that bad actors aren’t significantly impacting either of these systems.

With that in mind, we caught up with Nexpace’s chief operating officer Keith Kim to get his detailed responses to the current situation and what to expect next.

BlockchainGamer.biz What’s your main reaction to the first two months of launch?

Keith Kim: The early response to MapleStory N exceeded expectations, particularly in player engagement and economic activity. Upon launch, we saw monthly active wallets rise 127% month-on-month, while daily transactions surged past 860,000, with Avalanche hitting over 1 million daily transactions twice in one week, a milestone it hadn’t reached since early 2024.

At the same time, the early weeks tested our systems. Our conservative NESO settings were part of a deliberate strategy to gradually scale up alongside user participation, though this led to some friction in progression due to high NXPC inflows. We moved quickly to correct the course, boosting NESO rewards and stabilizing enhancement costs, revitalizing the player economy and leading to over 28.7 million enhancements and 11.9 million NXPC spent.

From launch [May 15] through July 15, a total of 1,862,521 unique accounts accessed the game. While this figure may include accounts created for purposes outside of regular gameplay, this level of traction on MapleStory N reflects the strength of both the IP and the potential of MapleStory Universe (MSU) as a next-generation Web3 ecosystem.

Overall, we view this phase as a strong validation of both the demand for MSU and the soundness of its economic design. These early months laid a solid foundation for sustainable growth, proving the resilience of our systems and the strength of our community. We’re confident this momentum will carry us forward as we continue expanding the MSU ecosystem.

Have you been surprised by the level of botting? Is this more than you would expect with a web2 MMORPG?

Botting is a known challenge in large-scale MMORPGs with a meaningful economy and real incentives at stake, and MapleStory N is no exception. While blockchain offers transparency and traceability, it also brings new challenges. The low cost of wallet creation and the difficulty of user identification make these issues more complex compared to traditional systems. Despite this, our team took early action to safeguard the player experience, banning over 100,000 malicious accounts and rapidly scaling our server infrastructure to meet the scale of player demand from Day 1.

We’re also actively refining detection systems and enforcement strategies to better distinguish between malicious activity and legitimate player behavior. Thanks to the Credit Level System acting as an effective hurdle against exploits, and drawing from Nexon’s deep LiveOps experience, we’ve been able to respond swiftly and decisively. As a result, more than 300,000 exploited accounts have been screened and sanctioned to date.  Our priority is preserving a fair, safe, and enjoyable gaming environment. Cheating undermines both gameplay and economic sustainability, two things we take seriously. As MapleStory Universe reaches a new scale of growth and development, we want to reiterate our commitment to protecting our community and building a resilient ecosystem that is ever evolving and improving.

Are you confident you have the balance right between banning accounts for bad behavior while not being too strict on players?

We’re taking a very intentional approach to moderation. Botting and bad actors disrupt gameplay, damage the economy, and drive away legitimate players. In a game like MapleStory N, where community-driven economies and participation are core to the experience, these issues are only further intensified. At the same time, we acknowledge the risks of over-policing and are careful to avoid penalizing genuine players.

That’s why we’ve implemented a multi-layered review system and transparent enforcement strategies that include pattern detection, behavior flagging, and post-ban appeals. It’s a dynamic process that improves over time, and we’re committed to continuously updating it based on feedback and data.

Trust and safety are not just operational concerns; they are core to building a creative and resilient MapleStory Universe ecosystem. From better creator tooling to smarter anti-cheat systems, our focus is on cultivating an environment where fairness, innovation and enjoyment can converge.

What economic KPIs are you most happy with?

One of the most encouraging economic KPIs so far is the scale of real token usage within the ecosystem. In just the first two months, players have spent over 11.9 million NXPC on in-game activities, primarily item enhancement, which translates to approximately $15 million based on the current market price. This figure is not theoretical; it represents tokens that players actively chose to use within the game economy rather than simply holding or speculating.

This demonstrates two important validations for us. First, it shows that players recognize the utility and value of NXPC as a core part of the gameplay loop, not just as a financial asset. Second, it confirms that our economic design is working as intended to drive healthy token circulation through meaningful gameplay engagement.

How much of an issue is it that the NXPC token price is down 50% since launch?

Token price fluctuations are a natural part of any tokenized ecosystem and may be influenced by broader market dynamics beyond the control of a single project. However, we’ve never viewed short-term price action as our success metric. MapleStory Universe was designed not for hype cycles, but to support a sustainable, long-term ecosystem where players and creators are actively involved.

That said, we are well aware of current market conditions. While we do not take direct action to influence token prices, we believe the natural demand for NXPC will continue to strengthen as the MapleStory Universe expands. Upcoming large-scale content updates for MapleStory N, alongside the rollout of new ecosystem dApps and builder features through Synergy Apps, will introduce more ways for NXPC to be utilized across a broader range of experiences.

NXPC is meant to be used rather than hoarded. Whether it’s customizing in-game content or activating API tools in Synergy Apps, the value of NXPC comes from its utility. Based on player behavior and recent data, that vision is being realized. Moreover, as we roll out more ecosystem apps and builder features, NXPC will be embedded across a wider range of experiences beyond the MapleStory N. That’s where the long-term value lies: in the evolving role NXPC plays within an expanding ecosystem and economy.

What kind of builder activity are you hoping to see, and how will that shape the future of the ecosystem?

We envision a future where our builders are integral ecosystem participants, connecting to a system that encourages utility, supports modular development, and rewards shared growth. Already, we are seeing early traction with third-party guild tools, dashboards, and mini-games. But our long-term goal is to unlock a true Infinite IP Playground where IP is dynamic, open and continuously reimagined through player experimentation and creativity. For example, players can enjoy core MapleStory mechanics, like item enhancement, directly through the web without logging into the full game anytime soon. This means that casual players will be able to participate in MapleStory Universe’s core loop anytime and anywhere.

Synergy Apps will be central to this vision. They allow creators to build integrated gameplay layers, mint assets, and exchange value with NXPC, creating a powerful feedback loop between utility, creativity, and ownership. With an open API to allow users to engage with them, we’re also making it easier for newcomers to participate, turning loyal players into active contributors. This builder-centric approach decentralizes content creation and lays the groundwork for a permissionless ecosystem that evolves beyond what our core team could ever develop alone. Builders are not just participants; they are co-architects of MapleStory Universe.

Finally, when do you expect the first third-party apps in the MapleStory Universe to be live?

We’re entering a very exciting new phase indeed. As we prepare for third-party development across the ecosystem, we expect the first batch of pioneer builders to begin launching their apps gradually throughout the rest of this year. Looking ahead to next year, we anticipate the pace of both builder onboarding and Synergy App launches to accelerate significantly. MapleStory Universe is gearing up for more user-created dapps that tap into core gameplay systems, while continuing to expand the tools and infrastructure needed to bring those ideas to life.

Our upcoming ecosystem updates are designed to support this mission, with more accessible APIs, improved tooling, and new support programs built for player contribution. All of this ties into our broader vision of the Infinite IP Playground.

Ultimately, the future of MapleStory Universe will be defined by its community of creators. These third-party apps promise to diversify the ecosystem, unlock new types of experiences, and demonstrate what’s possible when worldbuilding becomes collaborative. We’re excited about what’s on the horizon, and even more eager to see what our builder community creates.
