How to play FIFA Rivals

Mythical Games’ mobile football game FIFA Rivals is now live on Apple App Store and Google Play Store. You should download it.

But once you’ve done so, how do you play the game?

Here’s our handy guide to the game’s key features, both in terms of gameplay, meta progression and use of NFTs.

1. How does the gameplay work?

FIFA Rivals is a PVP game where every match is a real-time contest between another person. Lasting for two minutes or the first to score two goals, the gameplay sees one person trying to score a goal by moving their players around the pitch, drawing lines from their players to where they should run.

Things are a little different in terms of the player with the ball, however. Here, you tap on the pitch to direct where you want them to run and/or draw a line from the player to where you want to pass the ball or shoot.

Although the gameplay is fundamentally real-time, there is a turn-based element in which both the attacker and defender have a couple of seconds in which to make their moves by tapping and drawing lines etc.

The defender can also move their players around the pitch by drawing lines and/or tapping on their opponent’s ball carrier to trigger their players to try and tackle them. If their players are close enough, you can double-tap to attempt a slide tackle. If badly timed, this will result in a free-kick.

This activity continues until possession switches from one person to the other, either because it’s a goal, the goalie saves the shot or the ball goes out of play for a goal kick. Then the roles are reversed.

There are also super moves, which become activated during the game. These enable you to score goals more easily or can also be used in defence, notably by your goalie.

If the game is a draw at the end of two minutes, the action switches to a penalty shootout in which each person takes turns taking and defending three penalties. If the game is still tied after three penalties, the penalties go into sudden death.

2. What’s the metagame?

As with many F2P games, FIFA Rivals has several reward systems. The main one is that when you win a game, you’re rewarded with a ball containing random rewards. These range from soft and hard currency to player level up cards as well as players you can add to your team.

Each of these balls takes a certain number of hours – typically, two to eight – to unlock. There are four slots for reward balls and you can open them immediately by spending the game’s gems hard currency.

Other reward systems include a timed Season Pass, with free and premium rewards, a 28-day-long daily rewards system, a 20 level one-off progress path, which is unlocked via collecting XP, and the themed FIFA Club World Cup 2025 program of tasks and rewards. You also get rewards depending on what league tier you’re playing.

Of course, there are also plenty of options if you want to go to the shop and spend real money buying items and rewards.

3. How do you get NFTs?

Although you can win NFTs from within the game, the simplest way to get NFT players is to go to the Mythical Market. Make sure you log into the market using the same email that you’re using for FIFA Rivals!

Mythical Market is the NFT marketplace for all Mythical Game’s games, which include NFL Rivals, Nitro Nation and Blankos.

Here you can buy all the NFTs in FIFA Rivals, whether that’s players or items such as balls, boots, emojis, animations, kits or emblems. Of course, if you also own NFTs, you can attempt to sell them, either by setting a price and waiting to see if anyone buys them or using the Instant Sell price if that’s an available option.

Another interesting way to get rid of unwanted NFTs is the Quick Trade, in which you choose what NFT you want to buy, paying for it by bundling your unwanted NFTs until the prices match.
