Leaving dull 2024 behind, blockchain gaming looks to thrive in 2025
In the broad sweep of blockchain gaming history, 2024 will not be seen as a significant year.
Sure, it started in a promising vein with plenty of gaming tokens launched, but as the months rolled by, sentiment soured as crypto prices dropped and many of the games which launched failed to live up to expectations. Examples included Heroes of Mavia and Guild of Guardians, while even popular games such as Pixels suffered from volatile player bases.
The meta changed in Q2 with the rise of Telegram and its TON blockchain, providing a new opportunity in terms of onboarding players to simple games. However this trend has yet to demonstrate success in terms of generating long term retention.
Yet, this isn’t to say 2024 was a total disaster. High profile titles such as EVE Frontier, MapleStory Universe and Off The Grid launched their initial playables, while The Sandbox completed its fourth alpha season.
These – and other games – will launch more complete experiences in 2025. Mythical Games’ FIFA Rivals and Pudgy Party are two more titles that hope to attract mass market audiences thanks to their mobile-focus and use of high profile licenses.
But more importantly, the year ended on a high for crypto with the election of Donald Trump creating highly positive vibes and pushing Bitcoin through the $100,000 barrier for the first time.
Combined with the rising trend for AI agents, which are already being integrated into ecosystems such as Today, Parallel, Shatterline and Planet Mojo, the likelihood is that 2025 will be a substantially more positive and interesting year for blockchain gaming.
