As we’re about to close the chapter of 2024 and look towards the dawn of a new year, we’ve been asking some of the key members of the blockchain gaming sector about their thoughts on the past year and what they expect in 2025.
David Johansson is CEO of MetaKing Studios, which is developing Blocklords and the LRDS gaming blockchain.
What was the most significant trend for the sector of 2024?
Bitcoin reaching $100K was the defining moment. It brought a surge of confidence and capital to blockchain, fueling progress in areas like gaming and decentralized apps. The long, slow years of uncertainty gave way to a clear signal: blockchain isn’t going anywhere.
Another shift worth noting is the leap in game quality. Developers are starting to release titles that can genuinely compete with traditional games, and that’s drawing in players who care about more than speculation.
How did the focus of your business change this year?
2024 was transformational for Blocklords. We scaled from a niche community of under 20,000 players to nearly 2 million. Launching $LRDS on Coinbase was a huge milestone, but so was expanding the universe with Blocklords Dynasty and improving the core gameplay experience.
This kind of growth forces you to adapt quickly. Scaling operations, keeping up with player demands, and staying true to what makes the game great—those were our biggest challenges. Moving forward, we’re focused on refining the strategy genre in web3 and exploring AI tools to unlock new possibilities.
What do you predict will be the most important trends in 2025?
Here are the trends I see shaping 2025:
Web2 Studios Moving to Web3
- Layoffs and shrinking budgets are pushing traditional studios to explore new funding sources. Web3 offers that and more, so the migration is inevitable. This influx of talent will elevate the industry.
Stronger Community Token Models
- More projects will design tokenomics that prioritize player engagement and rewards. Meme coin mechanics are influencing how communities are built, and this will spill over into gaming.
The Revival of Gaming Tokens
- After a volatile year, gaming tokens are poised for a comeback. Confidence is building again, and better-designed economies will support this trend.
What was your favorite blockchain game of the year?
Off the Grid stood out. Their console-focused approach brought a level of polish and accessibility that’s rare in blockchain gaming. It’s a solid example of how to reach beyond the usual audience and challenge expectations.
What’s your New Year’s resolution and what resolution would you enforce on the industry?
I want to keep pushing the boundaries of what blockchain can offer games. There’s so much potential in combining great gameplay with the unique features web3 enables, and I want to focus on finding new ways to deliver that.
As for the industry, I’d challenge it to stop clinging to old assumptions. Blockchain gaming still faces skepticism from gamers and critics who haven’t looked closely enough. The stigma is fading, but it’s on us to release games that make people think differently.
