Immutable’s Robbie Ferguson on building the most valuable blockchain gaming network
As we’re about to close the chapter of 2024 and look towards the dawn of a new year, we’ve been asking some of the key members of the blockchain gaming sector about their thoughts on the past year and what they expect in 2025.
Robbie Ferguson is the co-founder and president of Immutable.
What was the most significant trend for the sector of 2024?
Blockchain gaming is rapidly evolving, with several key trends driving its growth and innovation. Leading the charge is the rise of Telegram games, which leverage the platform’s massive user base to make gaming more accessible and social. By integrating games directly into a communication app, developers simplify onboarding, build vibrant communities, and engage players where they already spend their time. Immutable is at the forefront of this trend, introducing community-building tools for Telegram alongside features that enhance player immersion and interaction.
This evolution is supported by a significant migration of games to optimized gaming chains capable of handling the demands of modern blockchain gaming. Immutable is leading this shift as reported by GAME7, experiencing 71% year-over-year growth in game migrations, more than any other chain. This momentum is underscored by over 225 new games signed to build on Immutable in 2024 and the launch of 35 titles, marking a record year for the platform.
Together, these advancements highlight blockchain gaming’s transition to more scalable and community-focused ecosystems. As platforms like Immutable continue to drive innovation, the industry is poised to redefine how players connect, engage, and own their gaming experiences.
How did the focus of your business change this year?
In 2024, our strategy has been focused on creating the world’s most valuable network for games by building the number one gaming wallet and chain, with Passport at the core of this vision. Immutable will continue increasing our focus on building the best consumer gaming experiences through Passport including recent iterations such as permissionless transactions and our new Play portal.
We are continuously upgrading our infrastructure, making incremental and impactful improvements to accelerate performance, drive monetization, and achieve growth. Through disciplined execution and prioritization, we are committed to exceeding customer expectations and strengthening our leadership in the gaming ecosystem.
What do you predict will be the most important trends in 2025?
- Web3 gaming is poised for a breakthrough, with top-quality games, many years in development set to launch in the next 12 months. These titles are projected to attract hundreds of thousands, and in some cases, millions of active users, cementing gaming as web3’s largest consumer category. In an industry shaped by power laws, where runaway hits often emerge unpredictably, the coming year is set to deliver surprises and significant upside from unexpected corners of the market.
- The surge of institutional demand and interest will not stop, and will only accelerate. Most large institutions are still catching up to the opportunities in web3 and digital assets. In 2025, this will continue across gaming, defi, and many other sectors.
- With the likelihood of regulatory clarity around many aspects of web3 in the US and across major markets, teams across gaming and broader web3 could benefit and unleash new and exciting innovations that will push our industry forward.
- In 2025, full-service platforms that integrate the most adopted blockchain, streamlined wallets, and robust player-facing infrastructure are setting the standard for driving user adoption and engagement. These platforms not only simplify development but also funnel players and attention toward the top games across the sector. Immutable has been at the forefront of this trend, refining its wallet and passport experience to deliver seamless onboarding and unmatched usability for developers and players alike.
What was your favourite blockchain game of the year?
RavenQuest is a particular project that we’re excited about.
Built on the success of Ravendawn, RavenQuest drops players into a constantly changing world where every choice has impact. With a class system that lets you mix and match abilities, you can explore ancient lore, dominate trade, or dive into intense combat. Whether you’re solving puzzles or taking on PVP battles, RavenQuest offers a fresh take on MMORPGs with the depth and freedom players expect.
The game has had some recent wins such as winning “Best Adventure Game” at the industry GAM3 Awards. It’s also become the most watched web3 game on Twitch (1.2M+ viewers during a 9 day early access period) and in just 10 days of Early Access Phase 2, over 74,000 unique Adventurers have journeyed through the game – trading, battling, and conquering!
What’s your New Year’s resolution and what resolution would you enforce on the industry?
Drive the next wave of web3 gaming growth by prioritizing what players value most. Use Passport to deliver seamless, impactful experiences and exceed expectations. Focus on fine-tuning our ecosystem to accelerate adoption, enhance monetization, and build a thriving, player-driven community.
Gaming is bigger than music, movies, and TV combined, growing 10% year-on-year. The opportunity is massive, but only if we put players first.
