Square Enix becomes a Tezos baker

Japanese gaming giant Square Enix is continuing to invest into blockchain infrastructure with the news that it’s become a validator for Tezos.

Previously, it was a launch validator for Japanese gaming blockchain Oasys, as well as being involved in the formation of the DAO running the Mythos Chain.

Tezos validators are known as bakers. The network currently has around 275 bakers, of which around 100 are public validators that any users can delegate tokens to using the protocol’s liquid delegated proof of stake design.

There’s no news that Square Enix is going to be actually launching any games, however.

Tezos’ most high-profile game to-date is US developer Distinct Possibility’s Reaper Actual, which is using its Etherlink infrastructure for EVM compatibility. Other game developers who have experimented with the network include TapNation. Manchester United also used it for its digital collectibles while Tezos was the team’s training kit sponsor. However, that deal ended in June 2025.

The blockchain says its total gaming activity during 2025 saw over 440,000 users driving 31 million transactions.

“Square Enix has invested in various blockchain initiatives over the years. Operating a baker node on Tezos allows us to participate in and better understand this technology while contributing to the network’s operations,” commented its general manager of investment and business development Hideaki Uehara.

Some of those investments include the likes of Soccerverse, HyperPlay and The Sandbox.

“Having Square Enix as a validator brings tremendous credibility to the Tezos network. Their reputation in gaming makes them an ideal partner as we continue to demonstrate Tezos’ potential beyond traditional applications. We’re excited to see how their expertise might contribute to the evolution of gaming,” added Trilitech’s head of gaming Efe Kucuk.
