Abstract to shut down as Igloo refocuses on Pudgy Penguins

After weeks of speculation, Abstract has confirmed that it is winding down. The consumer-focused Ethereum layer-2 blockchain backed by Pudgy Penguins parent company Igloo will shut down on 15th December 2026.

Users must move their assets before that deadline. The team warns that funds left on the network will become inaccessible, while its engineering and ecosystem staff will help projects migrate to other chains.

The decision marks a retreat from Igloo’s ambition to build a blockchain around mainstream entertainment, games and recognizable brands. Abstract launched its mainnet in January 2025, seeking to make crypto easier to use through its Portal discovery platform and Abstract Global Wallet.

But building appealing consumer products did not produce a sustainable business for the network itself. Abstract says growth stalled because of its restricted DeFi ecosystem, thin liquidity, limited institutional participation and a smaller budget than competitors.

The team says it spent the previous 12 months exploring ways to find product-market fit and scale the chain. Ultimately, it concluded that continuing to exhaust resources on an operation that was neither sustainable nor growing could no longer be justified.

Games that used the blockchain included the YGG Play platform, Pudgy Party, Gigaverse and Cambria.

Igloo CEO Luca Netz said the company had been funding Abstract for 18 months and had lost tens of millions of dollars over two years. Its resources will now be concentrated on Pudgy Penguins, the NFT collection and its PENGU token.

Those losses came despite substantial activity. Abstract reported more than 325 million transactions and four million wallets, while businesses operating on the network generated more than $40 million in revenue. It also attracted brands including Disney and Red Bull Racing.

Netz said Igloo considered launching an Abstract token or pursuing an initial coin offering, but decided against it. Raising fresh capital from the community would not have resolved the underlying lack of demand.

“A token only works if there is something driving demand to it,” he said, arguing that launching one without conviction would have been a disservice to users.

For blockchain game developers, the shutdown creates an immediate migration challenge, although some Abstract games had already announced they were moving to Robinhood Chain.

As for users, they can withdraw through Abstract’s Migration Hub or its native bridge, with the latter carrying an expected three-hour delay. The team recommends acting early and checking official channels to avoid impersonators and fake migration sites.

The Migration Hub is located at migrate.abs.xyz and the native bridge at native-bridge.abs.xyz.
