Nibiru’s Karl Blomsterwall on the growth of Planet IX and new project Illumicati

As the year comes to an end, we’re asking some of the key members of the blockchain gaming sector what they thought about what happened in 2023, and what they expect in 2024.

Karl Blomsterwall is the CEO of Nibiru, the Swedish game studio working on Polygon-based Planet IX and new Ethereum-based project Illumicati.

You can check out all our interviews in this series here.

What was the most significant news of 2023?

For Nibiru it was hitting 100,000 MAUWs in Planet IX on Polygon, which is a major accomplishment in web3 gaming. Our aim will be to top this number in 2024.

Also Nibiru launched the Illumicati project on the Ethereum chain, where the token MILK kicked off very well by hitting $6 million market cap in the first week of launch. The path on this project is quite mysterious at the moment, but there’s a DAO coming where holders and fans of the project will be able to take part in how the future of the Illuminati will be shaped.

How did the focus of your business change this year?

We changed focus from getting new players in, to building out more and better aspects of the game, as well as improving as many bugs as possible. We get a lot of great feedback from our players and community. Listening to them makes us quite efficient at seeing and fixing issues in the game before they grow too big.

Also we launched our second project as Nibiru, which we believe has a very bright future on the Ethereum space, and we’re happy to see our community from Planet IX share the excitement of what possibilities these two quite different projects can unlock for holders and players going forward.

What do you predict will be the most important trends in 2024?

It’s very likely that 2024 will be the year that web3 gaming has its first Golden Age. We know a lot of AAA developers are starting to get interested in the space, and many OGs from the crypto space agree that gaming is one of the potentially biggest catalyst for bringing in the next big wave of people to the space.

Also there’s been a ton of new projects building games during this past year of the bear market. Together with Medieval Empires, we host a very successful Twitter spaces called ‘New Era of Gaming’ where games and projects related to gaming come together to discuss what’s happening in the space and what’s new. Its clear from these conversations that everyone is experiencing a big growth in builders and developers believing in web3 gaming as the next big thing.

And of course the imminent next crypto bull run seems to be ready to unleash with the Bitcoin halving coming up next year.

What was your favourite blockchain game of the year?

Its still Planet IX. I’m very excited about a lot of the games currently in development. But so far I’ve not seen a game with the diversity and complexity that Planet IX has. The strategy aspect I find very appealing, and the ability for players to Play-and-Earn in a myriad of ways makes for a very engaging experience where you are always looking for ways to optimize how you play the game.

What’s your New Year’s resolution and what resolution would you enforce on the industry?

My New Year’s resolution is to heavily increase our player-base and the amount of holders of our IXT utility token. Currently we are sitting at around 240,000 holders of IXT and I think 2024 will see this number increase quite substantially.

In terms of what Planet IX brings to the industry, we want to keep pushing on great partnerships, incorporating as much new technology as we can in our game. Having the size and user base we have, we want to push the web3 space forward in terms of implementing new tech that’s positive for the growth of everyone.

It’s my hope that the majority of people working in crypto and web3 will consider the overall positive growth and reputation of the space when they build and create.
