MetaKings’ David Johansson predicts majority of big publishers doing web3 in 2024

As the year draws to an end, we’re asking some of the key members of the blockchain gaming sector what they thought about what happened in 2023, and what they expect in 2024. You can check out all our interviews in this series here.

David Johansson is the CEO and co-founder of MetaKing Studios, the Swedish game developer of Blocklords.

What was the most significant news of 2023?

On our end the most significant news was the early access launch of BLOCKLORDS on the Epic Games Store.

For the industry as a whole I think the most important news were the updated rules for web3 games on the Apple and Google stores, paving the way for larger releases.

How did the focus of your business change this year?

2023 was about hunkering down and delivering products. With the uncertainty of the market we had to cut costs and be extremely efficient, but the team came out on the other side of it stronger and with the foundation for a great game released and available to the public.

What do you predict will be the most important trends in 2024?

I predict more than half of the major publishers will more than likely be working on at least one web3 project in 2024. I also anticipate, alongside this growth in web3 gaming, that we will see the first web3 games surpass 5 million Daily Active Users (DAU) in 2024.

The web3 gaming industry is still growing, as evidenced by recent reports, and major players like Animoca Brands, AWS, and Polygon Labs are leading the way. We can expect web3 to spread with the same ferocity throughout other entertainment industries, like music and movies, given the attention these industry leaders are giving the technology.

What was your favourite blockchain game of the year?

With the recent launch it has been hard to play many games except for BLOCKLORDS, but impressed with what Pixels has achieved since their Ronin launch.

What’s your New Year’s resolution and what resolution would you enforce on the industry?

My new year’s resolution is to continue improving the game and adding new features as possible in 2024. Very excited about the battle and economy systems we are currently working on.
