Web3 sim Today reveals advanced AI character engine Dreamia

Web3 cosy simulation game Today has unveiled details of its AI-driven character engine. Labelled Dreamia, the engine uses advanced AI to create intelligent, interactive NPCs which manifest complex personalities and responsive lifelike behaviors.

Thanks to a team of data scientists and AI engineers fine-tuning open-source LLMs, the NPCs will have the ability to generate memories and awareness of changes in the environment.

Today co-founder Michael O’Connor commented, “We are quite literally building the next generation of gameplay. Our bespoke, story-first approach is what makes Dreamia so special: we’re embedding the nuances of real-life dynamics into NPCs so they have emotional depth, contextual awareness and responsiveness.”

With the integration of Dreamia, players also gain more influence in the game, as active creators, shaping the narrative of their own experience.

Oscar-winning writer and director, as well as Today co-founder and creative director, Ben Cleary, emphasised the value of storytelling, “My early passion for video games, books and movies shaped my love of storytelling as a multifaceted experience, blending visuals, interactivity, and emotional depth.”

“As games become more like movies, these narrative fundamentals are crucial differentiators to successfully deliver interactive storytelling at scale.”

Today is looking to launch Dreamia for players and other developers via a web interface and in-game later in 2024. Today’s next playtest is slated around mid-summer 2024, and its alpha is launching early in 2025.
