What’s next in the evolution of game economies? [video]

As we get closer to Pocket Gamer Connects London 2023, we look back at some of last year’s highlights

How can developers reduce friction when it comes to blockchain games? Is there a way to craft a roadmap to making game economies flourish? Dive into these questions and more in this session from the live conference Pocket Gamer Connects London 2022 where a panel of experts shares their views and more.

Game economies and sustainability

At Pocket Gamer Connects London 2022 (January 2022), Susan Cummings (Tiny Rebel Games) moderated a panel on the evolution of game economies. Jari Pauna (Supremacy Games), Anton Backman (Play Ventures), Ben Cousens (ZEBEDEE), Tony Pearce (Reality Gaming Group) and Caglar Eger (exmox) talked about their fields of expertise, as well as the success of Axie Infinity and what play-to-earn games are all about.

The panel shared insights on the differences between blockchain games and traditional games. They discussed the delicate balance between the gameplay and the earning aspect of blockchain games. Additionally, they shed some light on getting players invested into a game via education.

On friction and steep learning curves

A lot of the negative backlash for blockchain games comes from misinformation. Developers, as such, need to figure out how to make things simple for players to get into their play-to-earn games. For instance, the success of free-to-play games comes from how easy it is to try them out.

The panel also talks about how developers should approach these game economies. Are they gamifying cryptography or are they building a game? Are NFTs simply being used as a cash grab? Can developers turn to custodians who can handle these economies for them?

Toward the end of the session, the panel answers a few questions from the audience. They talk about issues on tokenomics, decentralisation and interoperability, as well as how to keep a game’s core community engaged (hint: there has to be trust, fun and entertainment).

This 40-minute talk is ideal for anyone who’s eager to know about the outlook of DAOs and the platforms where blockchain games will become available in the future. You can see conference panels like this in person by attending our upcoming partner events.
