Magical chess game Anichess launches first playable

Casual browser-based chess game Anichess, which is owned by Animoca Brands and co-developed with chess platform Chess.com and multiple world chess champion Magnus Carlsen, has announced its first playable.

Launching in two phases, Anichess combines classic chess with magic spells to mix up the meta. The first version to launch is the PVE mode in which players use magic spells to solve daily puzzles. They’re rewarded with Orbs of Power, an in-game asset linked to the game’s Orbs of Power NFTs.

Currently on Polygon, the NFTs are available for sale on OpenSea and provide in-game utility such as unlocking new puzzles with greater rewards.

The second phase of the rollout will see the launch of the PVP mode in Q1 2024.

Commenting on the launch of the first phase of Anichess, Magnus Carlsen said: “I am excited that Anichess is bringing innovation to chess with spells and strategy gaming elements that provide a refreshing chess experience.”

In conjunction with the announcement, Animoca Brands’ membership NFT-collection Mocaverse is launching Moca ID missions within Anichess through which users can earn Moca RP and collect additional Orbs of Power.

Anichess revolutionizes the classic royal game by fusing traditional strategy and gameplay with the innovative elements of spellcasting, a fantasy storyline, and Web3 functionality. We are thrilled to partner with Chess.com and to have Magnus Carlsen and other impressive chess talent with us as we pioneer this new dimension of chess,” commented Animoca Brands co-founder and executive chairman Yat Sui.
